Ravi Describes History of Ouray Schools

The Ouray School has a very important history.  A year after the first prospectors arrived, they had enough families to open a school.  The first school opened in a log cabin with forty-two kids.  It had no furniture.  Elizabeth King was the first teacher.  She taught for three months in the summer then she quit, because she thought the job was too hard.  In 1873 two new teachers came.  They were Oscar L. and his daughter Lenora, they also taught for one year.  In 1883, a huge knew school was built out of brick.  It was where the playground is now.  It had two hundred and six kids.  In 1893 more rooms were added.  In 1904-1908 the high school was where our school is now.  In 1913 an earthquake cracked the school.  Later in 1937, they demolished it to build a new school.   In 1951, the kindergarten room, first grade and second grade rooms were added to the school.  In 1965, the gym building was added because the old gym, the multipurpose room, was too small.  In 1997, the seventh and eighth grade rooms and library were added.  From the very beginning, Ouray was a family town.
