The Time Line Of Ouray
In 1875 men found rich minerals near Box Canyon falls while fishing. All at once Prospectors and miners both rapidly rushed to Ouray, Colorado to strike at rich gold. The first mine claim was named the Trout and Fisherman.
In 1876 Ouray was founded as a mining town.
In 1877 the Presbyterian Church was built and the same year the Episcopal Church was built too. Ouray was a family town from the beginning.
In 1880 Francis Carney built a brickyard where the pool is now.
In 1882 Mr. Robinson prospected the Yankee Girl mine. Mr. Robinson found very rich minerals in the Yankee Girl mine, which made many, many, many, many thousands of people, came to Red Mountain to get rich off of silver.
In 1882 John Ashfelter opened the livery barn. He was very successful until the trains arrived and the people needed less livestock.
In 1886 kitty height opened the Bon Ton restaurant.
In 1886 the Beaumont was built for rich people to come to Ouray and buy stakes in mines, or expand them. It was also the beginning of tourism.
In 1887 the Miners’ Hospital was opened because mines were very dangerous.
In 1888 the Court House was built. The first judge was Abram Cutler.
In 1888 the depot was built for trains to pass through Ouray.
In 1888 the Wright Opera house was built by Edward Wright. His wife wanted Christian entertainment in Ouray.
In 1892 the Bachelor Syracuse mine claim was filed.
In 1893 the silver panic came!!!!!!!!!!! The economy crashed, jobs were lost, and lots and lots of mines closed because silver prices went down a lot.
In 1896 Thomas Walsh discovered rich gold in the Imogene Basin. He also became one of the RICHEST men in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In 1898 Kitty Heit built and owned the St. Elmo Hotel.
In 1901 City Hall opened and had a grand ceremony. Tom Walsh paid for a library for the community on the second floor.
In 1904 the Elk’s Lodge was built being the 492 lodge in the USA. The clock always was set on 11:00 P.M. Then the Elk members would remember their departed brothers.
In 1913 the Citizen’s State Bank of Ouray opened, this was good news for miners because bank owners would lend the miners money to expand a mine.
In 1916 Floro and Marie Flor took over the Western hotel.
In 1924 Fellin Park was dedicated to Ouray by the Fellin family, it was a very big landmark
After 1931 seven Galloping Geese were made for transportation of people, mail, and many other things it carried too.
In 1948 the depot burned, causing the trains almost stop from coming to Ouray
In 1952 the last Galloping Geese ran, its last delivery was for mail.
In 1952, City Hall burned to the ground. The bell is all that remained.
In 1953 the last train ran because automobiles were made, and the highways were improved.
In 1983 the City Hall was rebuilt to look like it used to, thankfully.

Laura, great job. I really liked how you talked about how nice it was when the town rebuilt City Hall. I also liked how you talked about the silver panic and how the Depot burned.
